Editor Eisenberg has arranged the guidebook by the country's main regions and includes details on less often visited areas, such as the Southeast. Each chapter presents maps keyed to important cities and towns.
Information on local dining and lodging gives choices that range from inexpensive to expensive. Other features include advice on good walks, itineraries based on the time available to the tourist, and an ample index that adds to the ease of use. Finally, since many travelers to Spain often visit Morocco, an extra chapter on that country is also included. The guide's drawbacks are the lack of photographs and the editor's assumption that most travel will be done by car rather than by bus or train. Recommended for travel collections in all libraries and those visitors to Spain who will not use public transportation during their stay.-Olga B. Wise, Austin, TX Review: Fodor's Spain 2010 (Fodor's Gold Guides)User Review - Marion - GoodreadsI was very impressed with this guide. I haven't used any Fodor's Guides in the past and, as one who knows Spain fairly well, I selective with my guides. But this was very well-written and informative with great suggestions.

For centuries Tibet has fascinated travellers from around the world. Remote and once difficult to reach, it lies at an average height of nearly 5000m above sea level in the world's highest region. This Himalayan area is, of course, home to the world’s highest mountain, Mount Everest or Qomolangma, as the Tibetans know it. The stunning views of countless, snow-capped mountains are unforgettable, as are the beautiful clear waters of lakes such as Yandrok Lake, which the Tibetan people regard as a holy site.

The Tibetan Plateau is also the source of some of the world’s greatest rivers – the Yangtse, the Yellow River, the Ganges, and the Mekong, among others, all start their long journeys here. This is also the site of the highest hot springs on earth at Yangbajain.

The isolation of Tibet has meant that it developed its own unique culture, and when Buddhism was introduced in the seventh century AD, this too developed into a particularly Tibetan form known as Lamaism.

The Tibetan people are very devout and all across Tibet are temples and monasteries, many of which are “university monasteries” where Buddhist monks not only spend time in medication and contemplation, but in actively studying Buddhist scriptures and debating points of Buddhist thinking. The most important include the Lhasa’s famous Jokhang Temple, Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery where the famous debates are a daily attraction. Tashilumpo Monastery in Shigatse is of great importance, too. All these monasteries hold Tibetan treasures and Buddhist icons of huge value and beauty.

Tibet’s most famous building, the Potala Palace towers over Lhasa and was the home of the Dalai Lamas. It too is of great importance not only as a palace, but as a Buddhist study centre and shrine. No visitor to Tibet can miss it and think they know Tibet.

Living in such a remote and, away from the main cities, an often harsh country has made the people resilient, but dedicated to simple living. Their unique cuisine has to be sampled and the best place for this is in the small restaurants in the Barkhor Street area of Lhasa. This is the capital’s old quarter and remains very traditional.

But this is not to suggest the austerity of life at such an altitude means the Tibetan people don’t enjoy celebrations! A full list of festivals would be more than this short article can deal with. Most are connected to Tibetan Buddhism.

Typical is the Shoton Festival or Yoghurt Festival, held in August to mark the end of the monks’ summer retreat. Traditionally, the monks would be given gifts of yoghurt – a prized foodstuff in Tibet. Today, it is celebrated with feasting, singing and dancing. People gather in the park of Lhasa’s Norbulingka Park and picnic in groups sheltered from the wind by their colourful hanging walls of rugs and printed canvas.

But the most important festival is the secular Tibetan New Year, which is celebrated with carnivals, horse races, archery and, of course, more feasting. Other important festivals include the Harvest Festival and the month long Bathing Festival in which people engage in ritual bathing to wash away passion, greed and jealousy and attempt to abandon ego.

What ever time of year, there is always something going on to capture the imagination of visitors to this unique and beautiful land.

Ireland is full of magic and no matter how long you are staying it is likely you will return home with some unforgettable experience. The most exciting part is that despite being a small island the landscape is extremely varied. All around Ireland there are spotless beaches and majestic cliffs. Other places are flat or present a variety of mountains and lakes. The aim of this web site is to share some of the beauty this island has to offer. Think of it as a glimpse into Ireland's eyes. It is your guide to travelling and living in Ireland.

Ireland is part of the European Union and for many years it had one of the most dynamic economies. Nicknamed the Celtic Tiger the growth seemed to be unstoppable as more and more companies set up their base here due to the low corporate rate. Also a well trained workforce that spoke English was very appealing to multinational companies.

During the boom years lots of hotels were built and in general the infrastructure for the tourism industry was created that matches some of the best destinations in the world.

In 2009 Ireland which is a very open economy was hit by the global recession and it seems to carry on into 2010. For the visitors of the country this creates a much better value for money as prices have dropped significantly. Accommodation and food is a lot cheaper than in the previous years and there are lots of bargains around. This is the reason why I think it is the best time to consider visiting Ireland to take advantage of the good offers in order to enrich your life. My hope is to be able to provide some valuable tips which in turn will make your trip more enjoyable.

Luxembourger's are a linguistic lot, having three official languages: French, German and Luxembourgish. English is also taught at schools as well.

Luxembourg is famous for its private banking services and many international companies have offices here attracted by its tax haven status.

Luxembourg is a seat of several institutions of the European Union, including the European Court of Auditors, the European Court of Justice and the European Investment Bank.

There is more to Luxembourg though than business, banking and bureaucrats.

Luxembourg's eponymously titled capital sits on either side of a valley that splits the city in two. The river Petrusse flows here, where it joins the river Alzette. Down in the valley is the quarter called Grund.

Above the valley is the old town, where the Hotel de Ville (Town Hall) can be found. Also here is the Notre Dame Cathedral. While it's not the grandest cathedral in Europe it is close to the Place de la Constitution lookout, which gives you a spectacular view of the city looking over the valley.

Cross the valley over Pont Adolphe and you travel down Avenue de la Liberte, which looks like Paris in miniature. This leads all the way to Place de la Gare where the train station is.

Civil Unrest/Political Tension
We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution due to political uncertainty. You should avoid demonstrations and large public gatherings throughout Cameroon as they may become violent.
Bakassi Peninsula: We strongly advise you not to travel to the border area between Cameroon and Nigeria in the region of the Bakassi Peninsula. Sovereignty of the area had been disputed for many years and was handed from Nigeria to Cameroon on 14 August 2008. Tension in the area remains high and resettlement of the residents of the region is being negotiated. Tensions also remain high between the police and security personnel of both countries and you risk being caught up in localised fighting that may erupt without warning.

Crime
We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in Cameroon because of high levels of serious crime. Pay close attention to your personal security at all times and monitor the media for information about possible new safety or security risks.
Criminal activity is a serious problem throughout Cameroon. Violent crime is common in residential centres and on rural highways. Armed highwaymen operate throughout the country. Armed banditry is common in the border areas with the Central African Republic. Carjackings, muggings, robberies and petty theft occur in the capital city, Yaounde, and in the regional cities of Douala, Kribi and Maroua. In Yaounde, the suburbs of la Briquetterie, Mokolo and Mvog-Ada are particularly dangerous. There have been several incidents of robbery and rape committed against foreigners in Douala. Avoid travel after dark.
There have been a number of attacks by gangs of armed gunmen on restaurants and hotels known to be used by foreigners.
Due to the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, victims of violent crime, especially rape, are strongly encouraged to seek immediate medical assistance.
Eastern Provinces, Border with Central African Republic and Lake Chad region: We strongly advise you not to travel to the Eastern Provinces, the border area with the Central African Republic and the Lake Chad region. Armed banditry, kidnapping and carjackings are prevalent and cross-border skirmishes are common in these regions. For more information about kidnapping, see our Kidnap Threat in Africa travel bulletin.
Local Travel
Police checkpoints are common in Cameroon and the police may request payments from drivers and other occupants of the vehicle. If you can't produce identification (residence permit or certified copy of your passport) you may be detained by the police.
Most roads are in poor condition, vehicles are poorly maintained and badly driven, and road lighting is inadequate. Poor road conditions make it difficult to depart Cameroon via the land border with Gabon. For further advice on road safety, see our bulletin on Overseas Road Safety.
The border with the Republic of Congo is closed.
Visitors to the Lake Chad area should report to local authorities on arrival. The local authorities advise visitors to engage a reliable guide due to the dangerous security situation.
Airline Safety
Please refer to our travel bulletin for information about Aviation Safety and Security.
Natural Disasters, Severe Weather and Climate
The rainy season is June to September when flooding may occur and some roads become impassable.
Explosions and lava flows have occurred at Mont Cameroon. You should seek advice from local authorities before climbing.
Information on natural disasters can be obtained from the Humanitarian Early Warning Service. If a natural disaster occurs, follow the advice of local authorities.
Wildlife
Australians are advised to respect wildlife laws and to maintain a safe and legal distance when observing wildlife, including marine animals and birds. You should only use reputable and professional guides or tour operators and closely follow park regulations and wardens' advice.
Money and Valuables
Before you go, organise a variety of ways to access your money overseas, such as credit cards, travellers' cheques, cash, debit cards or cash cards. ATMs that accept international cards are limited in Cameroon and you should check the location of any such ATMs with your bank before you travel. Travellers' cheques and credit cards are accepted at major hotels in Yaounde. Travellers' cheques will only be cashed if accompanied by the original purchase receipt.
Make two photocopies of valuables such as your passport, tickets, visas and travellers' cheques. Keep one copy with you in a separate place to the original and leave another copy with someone at home.
While travelling, don't carry too much cash and remember that expensive watches, jewellery and cameras may be tempting targets for thieves.
As a sensible precaution against luggage tampering, including theft, lock your luggage. Information on luggage safety is available from Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority.
Your passport is a valuable document that is attractive to criminals who may try to use your identity to commit crimes. It should always be kept in a safe place. You are required by Australian law to report a lost or stolen passport. If your passport is lost or stolen overseas, report it online or contact the nearest Australian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate as soon as possible.
You are required to pay an additional fee to have a lost or stolen passport replaced. In some cases, the Government may also restrict the length of validity or type of replacement passports.
For Parents
For general information and tips on travelling with children see our Travelling Parents brochure.
If you are planning on placing your children in schools or childcare facilities overseas we encourage you to research the standards of security, care and staff training within those establishments. You should exercise the same precautions you would take before placing children into schools or childcare facilities in Australia.
Ideas on how to select childcare providers are available from the smartraveller Children's Issues page, Child Wise and the National Childcare Accreditation Council.

Local Laws
When you are in Cameroon, be aware that local laws and penalties, including ones that appear harsh by Australian standards, do apply to you. If you are arrested or jailed, the Australian Government will do what it can to help you but we can't get you out of trouble or out of jail.
Information on what Australian consular officers can and cannot do to help Australians in trouble overseas is available from the Consular Services Charter.
Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs may include heavy fines and lengthy imprisonment.
Penalties for serious crimes, such as homicide, include the death penalty.
Homosexual acts are illegal and penalties include prison sentences.
Photography of and around military zones, military assets and/or military personnel, government buildings, airports and ports is illegal.
Some Australian criminal laws, such as those relating to money laundering, bribery of foreign public officials, terrorism and child sex tourism, apply to Australians overseas. Australians who commit these offences while overseas may be prosecuted in Australia.
Australian authorities are committed to combating sexual exploitation of children by Australians overseas. Australians may be prosecuted at home under Australian child sex tourism laws. These laws provide severe penalties of up to 17 years imprisonment for Australians who engage in sexual activity with children under 16 while outside of Australia.
Local customs
Cameroon is a very conservative society and you should dress and behave so as not to offend.
Information for Dual Nationals
Cameroon does not recognise dual nationality. This may limit our ability to provide consular assistance to Australian/Cameroonian dual nationals who are arrested or detained. We recommend you travel on your Australian passport at all times.
Our Travel Information for Dual Nationals brochure provides further information for dual nationals.

Entry and Exit Requirements
Visa and other entry and exit conditions (such as currency, customs and quarantine regulations) change regularly. Contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Cameroon for the most up to date information.
A valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate is required for entry into Cameroon.
Cameroon is listed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as endemic for yellow fever. Some airlines may require passengers to present a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate before being allowed to board flights out of the country. If in doubt, check with your airline.
If you have visited Cameroon in the last six days prior to your date of return to Australia, Australian Customs officials will ask you to present a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate on entry into Australia.
Make sure your passport has at least six months' validity from your planned date of return to Australia. You should carry copies of a recent passport photo with you in case you need a replacement passport while overseas.

Health Issues
Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 has spread throughout the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) provides useful information for individuals and travellers on its website. For further information and advice to Australians, including on possible quarantine measures overseas, see our travel bulletin on Pandemic (H1N1) 2009.
We strongly recommend that you take out comprehensive travel insurance that will cover any overseas medical costs, including medical evacuation, before you depart. Confirm that your insurance covers you for the whole time you'll be away and check what circumstances and activities are not included in your policy. Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel. The Australian Government will not pay for a traveller's medical expenses overseas or medical evacuation costs.
Your doctor or travel clinic is the best source of information about preventive measures, immunisations (including booster doses of childhood vaccinations) and disease outbreaks overseas. The World Health Organization (WHO) provides information for travellers and our 'Travelling Well' brochure also provides useful tips for travelling with medicines and staying healthy while overseas.
Medical facilities in urban centres in Cameroon are limited and are extremely limited in rural areas. Pharmaceuticals are in short supply and poor quality substitutes are often used. Up-front payment for medical services is usually required and the inability to pay will often delay treatment. In the event of a serious accident or illness, medical evacuation to London, Paris or Johannesburg would be recommended. Costs for a medical evacuation can range from $A25,000 to $A200,000 depending on the circumstances.
Malaria occurs widely and throughout the year in Cameroon. Other insect-borne diseases (including yellow fever, filariasis and African sleeping sickness) also occur. We encourage you to take prophylaxis against malaria and take measures to avoid insect bites, including using insect repellent at all times.
Water-borne, food-borne, parasitic and other infectious diseases (including HIV/AIDS, cholera, meningitis, hepatitis, tuberculosis, polio, loiasis and river blindness) are prevalent with more serious outbreaks occurring from time to time. We advise you to boil all drinking water or drink bottled water, and avoid ice cubes and raw and undercooked food. Do not swim in fresh water to avoid exposure to certain water-borne diseases such as bilharzia (schistosomiasis). Seek medical advice if you have a fever or are suffering from diarrhoea.
The rate of HIV/AIDS infection in Cameroon is high. You should exercise appropriate precautions if engaging in activities that expose you to risk of infection.
The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has confirmed cases of avian influenza in birds in a number of countries throughout the world. For a list of these countries, visit the OIE website. For information on our advice to Australians on how to reduce the risk of infection and on Australian Government precautions see our travel bulletin on avian influenza.

After a 20-year French occupation, a Kingdom of the Netherlands was formed in 1815. In 1830 Belgium seceded and formed a separate kingdom. The Netherlands remained neutral in World War I, but suffered invasion and occupation by Germany in World War II. A modern, industrialized nation, the Netherlands is also a large exporter of agricultural products. The country was a founding member of NATO and the EEC (now the EU), and participated in the introduction of the euro in 1999.

The Netherlands has a prosperous and open economy, which depends heavily on foreign trade. The economy is noted for stable industrial relations, moderate unemployment and inflation, a sizable current account surplus, and an important role as a European transportation hub. Industrial activity is predominantly in food processing, chemicals, petroleum refining, and electrical machinery. A highly mechanized agricultural sector employs no more than 3% of the labor force but provides large surpluses for the food-processing industry and for exports. The Netherlands, along with 11 of its EU partners, began circulating the euro currency on 1 January 2002. The country continues to be one of the leading European nations for attracting foreign direct investment and is one of the five largest investors in the US. The economy experienced a slowdown in 2005 but in 2006 recovered to the fastest pace in six years on the back of increased exports and strong investment. The pace of job growth reached 10-year highs in 2007.

Administrative divisions: Drenthe, Flevoland, Friesland (Fryslan), Gelderland, Groningen, Limburg, Noord-Brabant (North Brabant), Noord-Holland (North Holland), Overijssel, Utrecht, Zeeland (Zealand), Zuid-Holland (source: CIA)

New Zealand’s landscape is nothing short of remarkable; its natural features so astonishing that it has even stood in for fantasy settings such as Middle Earth, Narnia, and has inspired Avatar.
It’s not surprising that in recent years, an increasing number of film directors have chosen New Zealand’s outstanding landscape as a backdrop – a diverse range of natural features make it a popular choice with location scouts. The perfect cone of Mt Taranaki became Japan’s Mt Fuji in The Last Samurai and the Southern Alps became the Himalayas for Vertical Limit. The Coromandel’s beautiful Cathedral Cove made a perfect setting for Cair Paravel in Prince Caspian, and dare we say that the Kiwi landscape might have done its bit to make Avatar the biggest movie of all time. For visitors, this diversity means you can stroll along a beach in the morning, stop at a winery for lunch and then be hiking along an alpine trail by the afternoon.

A WEALTH OF FAUNA
Straddling the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean, and situated at a point where tropical and polar currents meet, the surrounding waters of this island nation are home to a wealth of marine species including seals, dolphins and whales. And in New Zealand you can experience a close encounter with these remarkable marine mammals – swimming with dolphins, kayaking with seals or whale watching. Walkers flock to Abel Tasman National Park to hike through forest that grows right down to sandy coves. Fiordland National Park offers a very different experience – hiking in a rugged landscape of waterfalls, rainforest-clad cliffs and deep fiords, a landscape so precious that it is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Area. Further to the north are two of the Southern Hemisphere’s most accessible temperate-zone glaciers – rivers of ice fringed by lush green rainforest. There are more glaciers in Mt Cook National Park, lorded over by New Zealand’s highest peak – Mt Cook – and the Southern Alps.

THE EARTH’S FORCES
In the North Island, too, iconic mountains dominate the landscape. Mt Taranaki is an almost perfect cone rising from rolling hills, while in the central North Island the ‘Desert Road’ crosses a bleak landscape overlooked by a forbidding triad of volcanoes. Two of these, Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe, were used as sites for Mt Doom in The Lord of the Rings. North of Ruapehu is further evidence of the powerful geothermal forces that shaped the landscape. Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest lake, owes its existence to a long-ago volcanic eruption. These days, the region from Lake Taupo north to Rotorua is popular with visitors wanting to glimpse a remarkable array of geothermal features from bubbling mud pools to steam vents and thermal pools. From the North to the South Island and beyond, to the more than 700 offshore islands that make up this archipelago, New Zealand offers a diversity of geology, climate, flora and fauna that is, quite simply, astonishing. There is no other place on Earth quite like it.
